Characterized by quiet
neighborhoods with a Hudson River Shoreline coast, along with an exciting
nightlife, high-quality public and private schools, affordable homes, outdoor
programs and area attractions, the Town of Wappinger has much to offer
families.
Located 70 miles north of New York
City, the town encompasses 27.5 square miles, with media home values at
around $280,000. The walkable village of Wappingers Falls offers restaurants
and shops, along with the County Players at the Falls Theatre. The village also
has access to Mesier Park, the site of the Mesier Homestead & Museum and its
annual Sinterklass holiday event in December that celebrates the region's Dutch
heritage with stories and treats for kids. Wappinger's Arts and
Culture committee fosters creative endeavors through a variety of enrichment
programs, including poetry readings at the Resse Cultural Center.
Wappinger’s thriving night life is enjoyed through its many
restaurants, breweries, wine bars, and hot spots that offer live music on
weekends. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy more than 1,000 acres of park land,
including hiking, picnicking, kayaking, and camping.
Robinson Lane Baseball Complex and the town’s parks and recreation department
offer numerous programs and events annually for residents, including tennis,
fishing, basketball, gymnastics, aerobics and soccer. Additionally, the Martz
Field Recreation Facility’s popular summer camp attracts children from all
over.
There’s more. Access to the
Hudson River is available from the Chelsea Boat launch for a day of water
activities. With that, the Carnwath Historic Site and Park sits high above the
valley with breathtaking views and sunsets and an abundance of farm stands and
farmer's markets provide fresh local food.
Wappinger was the first settlement in Dutchess County. It
named for the Wappinger Indian Tribe and was first settled in 1659 as an
illegal settlement by the Massachusetts Bay Colony members, before their
eventual removal by the Dutch.
