Summer Fun Day #4: Make a Giant Memory in Phoenicia

Looking for something a little quirky to do this summer? At the Emerson Resort in Mt. Tremper you can visit the Guiness- stamped World's Largest Kaleidoscope! Housed in an old animal feed silo, here you will not only find the infamous Kaleidoscope you'll find gallery quality kaleidoscopes on display and for sale.

The main attraction silo is over 56 feet tall and wows audiences with a multi- media presentation of moving images and theater-quality sound. The specially created video used as the imagery was designed by Isaac Abrams, a pioneer in the psychedelic art movement of the 60's, the musical score by Gary Burke a local composer and drummer.

The show is mesmerizing for both children and adults. It runs every 10 minutes and admission is only $5 per person. Children under 11 are free. For more details, check out this review on two of the World's Largest in Ulster County!

After your Kaleidoshow, spend some time wandering the store featuring a vast collection of spectacular kaleidoscopes including some which are one-of-a-kind, designed by artists from around the world. This year the Emerson is celebrating with 20th anniversary of the World's Largest Kaleidoscope with a celebration on July 9th from 10am-5pm. This family-fun celebration includes a new Kaleidoshow, Kaleidoscope making workshops, drum circle, Tarot Card readings, refreshments, face painting, balloon animals and giveaways with Radio Woodstock! Save the date!

The Emerson is located in the heart of the Catskill Mountains surrounded by a wealth of activities and events with everything from hiking to art, music and shopping. At the Emerson Outfitter Shop you and your family can rent one of the giant bikes and enjoy a scenic ride, hike nearby trails, enjoy a picnic, go fishing on the Esopus or go tubing down the river. The kids may love a scenic ride on the nearby Catskill Mountain Railroad, horseback riding at the Ashokan Riding Club or if you are with older kids, rock climbing on the cliffs of the Shawangunk Mountains.

The region is also littered with arts and culture for the whole family to enjoy. 

A few ideas to complete your artsy-educational trip to Phoenicia include the Senate House or Maritime Museum in Kingston, the Woodstock Playhouse or just spend some time exploring Phoenicia rated USA's top ten coolest towns by Budget Travel Magazine.
