Did you know tidal waters influence the Hudson River’s flow as far north as Troy? This is just one of the tidbits of information you and your family will learn at the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Situated at the heart of the Kingston’s Rondout Historic Waterfront District, the Maritime Museum features fascinating information on the history of the Hudson River, including an education center for kids and steamboat-themed playground with real life ship parts.
Their brand new exhibit chronicles the history of wooden boat building in the Hudson River with a focus on Rondout Creek. In the East gallery you can learn about the wildlife that calls the Hudson River its home. Children especially love the live fish tanks in the East Gallery and the Steam Tug Mathilda which is permanently dry docked in the museum yard.
[Visit a lighthouse, take a hike, sail and explore with these great ideas for turning a trip on the river into an educational experience for the whole family]
You can book a guided tour, or wander the museum at your own pace. General admission is $7 adults and $5 children 18 and under. Hudson River Maritime Museum is open from 11am-5pm every day from April through November.
Before you go, check out their great “For Kids” page on their website for some fun pre-trip research.
