Summer Fun Day #10: Explore an old lighthouse

Jump this one up to the top of your summer bucket list and take your family on a stroll along the Hudson River to visit one of Northern Hudson Valley's most beautiful landmarks- The Saugerties Lighthouse.
Here you can step back in time more than 100 years to experience the rustic simplicity and charm of life in the middle of the river. The lighthouse was built back in 1869 atop a man- made island of wood cribbing and stone fill. (Today the picnic area sits on top the remnants of that island). The lighthouse that sits there today was restored in 1990 offering overnight bed and breakfast accommodations, public tours and special events.
{Beautiful beaches, historic homes and playgrounds- Here are 5 more favorite family picnic spots!}
The lighthouse may be the main event for your family outing but getting there is half the fun. The lighthouse can be reached via a half- mile nature trail and is surrounded by 17 acres of wooded grounds and tidal wetlands. Along the trails you will find beach side picnic areas, public decks, sandy walkways and more. If you love the Hudson River, find 10 unique ways to play on the river, here.

The grounds make an easy hike/ walk for visitors of all ages including children who can enjoy the nature, bird watching and boat spotting. Other activities include picnicking at the sandy beach along the trail and on the island adjacent to the Lighthouse. If you love visiting the beaches along the lighthouse trail, try one of these great Hudson Valley swimming holes and beaches on our roundup list, here.
A few things to remember when enjoying this beautiful site, please carry out what you carry in. Help to maintain the beautiful and safety of the area by leaving no trash, not picking the flowers, picking up after your dog and not throwing or misplacing any of the stones.
