Stanford, Town of

Stanford year around; a peaceful place to live

Don’t let Stanford in New York’s scant population of less than 5,000 residents lead you to believe it has few offerings. A peaceful, bucolic town, Stanford is characterized by lakes, parks and bike trails, plus close access to the Harlem Valley Rail Trail that goes from Wassaic up north to Chatham in Columbia County.

The town also boasts fine restaurants and many of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. Families enjoy visits to the Buttercup Farm Audubon Sanctuary that sits on 500 acres and is home to more than 80 species of birds. It also features six miles of trails where families can spend an outstanding afternoon.

The Cold Spring Early Learning Center serves youngsters from K-grade 2, while Upton Lake Christian School, a private school, is available pre-K-12. Rhinebeck, Millbrook, Pine Plains and Webutuck Schools are also nearby.

The Stanford recreation program holds an annual Haunted Fortress and a Trunk or Treat event; dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead celebration. The Repair Cafe in nearby Stanfordville offers help with fixing your small appliances, lamps, chairs, bicycles, vacuum cleaners, clothing and more, plus an inviting waiting area with coffee, tea and other refreshments.

Locals often visit the Trevor Zoo in nearby Millbrook to see and learn about herons and red pandas, among other species of animals. One resident said, “I love Stanford. I have lived here my entire life for a reason. It is beyond safe here, probably the safest town around. All the families know each other, and everyone is so friendly and nice.”

Stanford enjoys low unemployment, above average median home prices, and positive job growth. The town was formed in the 1700s from part of Washington, encompasses 50 square miles in the northwestern part of the Dutchess County and was home of the inventor of Scrabble, Mr. Alfred Mosher Butts as well as the actor James Cagney.
