Find the best places to go skiing, sledding, tubing, cross-county skiing and snowshoeing


When snowfall is heavy and the ground turns white, the sky is clear and so very bright. What can your family find to do all day and night? How about sledding, skiing, skating, or tubing. Your family will thank you so here’s some places for the choosing.

Grab your snow sled and hit the hills! There are many places throughout the Hudson Valley for playing in the snow! Whether you are looking for a mountain with a tubing hill and skis or a sledding hill for your play-at-your-own-risk fun we've got you covered!

As of December 7, many of the northern ski areas are open.

ORANGE COUNTY

Mount Peter Ski & Ride. 51 Old Mt. Peter Rd., Warwick. Enjoy ski hills, ski rentals, lifts, ski/snowboard lessons and tubing. Open Tuesday through Sunday; check site for hours and open trails.  845-986-4940.

Sterling Forest State Park. 116 Old Forge Rd., Tuxedo, 10987.  Cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Visit sites such as Southfields Furnace, the Sterling Furnace, and the Sterling Forge, and learn about the group's special outdoor hikes. There are closures in the park due to fire. Please see Trail Map for details. Park hours are dawn to dusk. 845-351-5907.

Victor Constant Ski Area. 732 Victor Constant Rd., West Point. Enjoy the slopes, skiing and snowboarding for family fun. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available weather permitting. Hours vary, check their website. Season snow passes are also available for full day. Equipment and lockers are available to rent. open to the public Monday through Friday from 3:00pm to 9:00pm. Weekends are reserved for military personnel and their families. 845-938-8810.

ULSTER COUNTY

Belleayre: 181 Galli Curci Rd., Highmount. A mountain where anyone can ski or learn to ski, this location offers tons of trails for skiing and snowboarding, lifts, mountain dining, and lodges. They also offer cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Open 7 days a week in the winter, lift start running at 9am through 4pm, lodges are open from 8am to 5pm. 845-254-5600.

Minnewaska State Park.  5281 Rte. 44-55, Highland. Enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and the scenic nature route along the way. The Park Preserve opens daily at 9am and closing times vary throughout the year. Hiking, snowshoeing, and dogs are not permitted on the groomed ski trails. The fee for parking at Minnewaska is $10 per car. 845-255-0752.

Mohonk Mountain House. 1000 Mountain Rest Rd., New Paltz. Enjoy food, accommodations, spa treatments, and winter activities all in the same place. Mohonk offers outdoor ice skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and snow tubing. Call for details. 855-883-3798.

Rocking Horse Ranch Resort. 600 State Route 44/55, Kerhonkson. Open Mon.-Sun. 10am-4pm. Enjoy horseback riding on snow covered hills, snow tubing, skiing, and ice skating. Call or make reservations online. 866-600-0859.

SULLIVAN COUNTY

Holiday Mountain Ski & Fun Park. 99 Holiday Mountain Rd., Monticello. Open Tuesday through Friday 3pm-9pm, Saturday 9am-9pm, and Sunday 9am-5pm. Offers tubing, ski and snowboard lessons. Holiday currently has 6 ski trails serviced by 2 chairlifts, a “learning center” serviced by its own “magic carpet” conveyor lift for beginners and all new snowmaking for the season. Projected opening day December 19. 845-796-3161.

Villa Roma Resort & Conference Center. 356 Villa Roma Rd., Callicoon. This time of the year, when the temperatures drop, and the snow hits the slopes; it means skiing, snowboarding and tubing time at Villa Roma! Break out your skis because we have more than just a few hills for your ride. Then warm up your toes by the fire within our Chalet or warm yourself from the inside out with a cup of hot chocolate. 845-887-4880.


DUTCHESS COUNTY

Bowdoin Park: 85 Sheafe Rd., Wappingers Falls. Open November through February 8am-5pm. Enjoy sledding on the main hill after it snows. 845-298-4600.

Clarence Fahnstock State Park: 1498 Route 301, Caramel, 10512. Enjoy sledding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. (845) 225-7207. Currently closed

James Baird State Park. 14 Maintenance Ln., Pleasant Valley. Open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the wintertime. 845-452-1489.

Drayton Grant Park at Burger Hill. 3137 New York 9G, Rhinebeck. Open year-round, daily from sunrise to sunset. A sled and Burger Hill go together like peanut butter and jelly. The only catch is the half mile walk back up after each speedy descent. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also available. 845-876-4213.

Mills-Norrie State Park. 9 Old Post Rd., Staatsburg. Enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Call for details and scheduling. 845-889-4646.

Ogden Mills & Ruth Livingston Mills State Park. Old Post Rd., Staatsburg. Open year-round. Various activities include cross country skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing trails. 845-889-8851.

Wilcox Memorial Park. 1639 NY-199, Stanfordville. Enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Visit the website for more information. 845-758-6100.

PUTNAM COUNTY

Thunder Ridge Ski Area. 137 Birch Hill Rd., Patterson, 12563. Enjoy day and nighttime skiing, ski lifts, snowboarding, and a slope side lodge with a cafeteria, pub and panoramic views. Visit the website for opening dates and hours. 845-878-4100.

COLUMBIA COUNTY

Catamount Mountain Resort. 3290 New York 23, Hillsdale. Enjoy 42 trails and park areas in all with lessons available for the whole family. Family nights on select Saturdays. Check the website for weather and hours. 518-325-3200.

GREENE COUNTY

Windham Mountain Club. 19 Resort Dr, Windham. Windham Mountain Club is New York’s premier members’ club that invites the public to ski and snowboard during the winter season. Across 1,200 pristine alpine acres, Windham Mountain Club provides guests, members, and families and friends with an elevated experience to escape to. (518) 734-4300.
