Protect birds from window collisions

Bird migration is ramping up. Each year, millions of birds are killed in window collisions in the US. Here are some tips to help prevent migrating birds from hitting windows at your home or office:
  • Draw interior shades so birds can’t see through problem windows
  • Exterior screens will prevent most collisions
  • Hang ribbons, decals, tape, or appliqués on the outside of windows (about 4 inches apart)
  • Mark the outside of a window with soap
  • Close blinds on the opposite side of the house (or simply close interior doors) so birds can’t see through
  • Turn off unneeded exterior lights at night, especially during migration periods. Bright, artificial lights can be disorienting to migrating birds
