Shops,
restaurants, arts and education, the Town of Poughkeepsie borders the City of
Poughkeepsie on the western side of Dutchess County, New York. Among its many features
is the Arlington Business District, whose walkable neighborhood includes restaurants
with tasty food, beauty salons, beer and coffee shops, clothing stores, fitness
venues, live music and a farmer's market.
In addition
to public and private elementary and secondary schools, the Town of
Poughkeepsie is home to Vassar College, Marist College and Vassar's Lehman Loeb
Art Center, as well as Dutchess Community College.
The walkable
Arlington Business District offers more than shops and restaurants; in early
December you can experience the family-friendly Holiday Festival and tree
lighting with a petting zoo, marshmallow toasting, egg nog crawl, parade and
train ride. In summer, there’s a street festival, with live music and vendors that
sell wares and food. Mondays through Saturdays public buses are available to
transport riders into the nearby City of Poughkeepsie.
Samuel
Morse, inventor of Morse Code and the telegraph was also an artist whose home,
Locust Grove, is now a museum in town that’s open for tours and school field
trips. The town's recreation department has programs for all age groups.
For outdoor
enthusiasts, the Town of Poughkeepsie owns and maintains more than 300 acres of
parkland; 18 of them being neighborhood parks. Three community parks include baseball
and soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts, pavilions and playgrounds. Apple
orchards and wildlife also can be enjoyed and shopping is plentiful at the
Poughkeepsie Galleria, Poughkeepsie Plaza, Shoppes at South Hills and other
shopping centers.
