North East; a small town with lots to offer

A small and inviting town in northern Dutchess County, North East offers its 3,000 residents plus visitors a mix of quiet community life with lots of family fun, engaging performances, arts programs and shopping.  

The town’s downtown is centered in the Village of Millerton, whose active main street boasts fitness studios, shopping and nightlife, and an annual two-day art event in the fall. The village also includes galleries and films at The Moviehouse, a theater famous for its indie films and live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera and London's National Theater. Here, too, The Music Cellar features live performances and music lessons for all ages and the Hiddenhurst Estate is an architectural gem to visit in the Coleman Station Historic District. As well, the North East Community Center offers year-round programs and classes for all ages.

Outdoor enthusiasts appreciate nearby golfing and access to the northern trail head of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, where16 miles of the paved trail runs south through the eastern part of Dutchess County to the Wassaic Metro North Station. Also close are Stissing Mountain, Appalachian Trail and Innisfree Gardens, all of which provide year-round programs and outdoor activities. Walking tours are given seasonally the North East Historical Society with tickets available at Harney & Sons Fine Teas and The Irondale Schoolhouse, both in Millerton, along with Oblong Books in nearby Rhinebeck. North East Dutchess Transit is available for trips locally for shopping or doctor visits, with Sharon Hospital in nearby Sharon, Connecticut the closest large medical facility.

Most of North East’s residents have a median age of 45 and median income of about $45,000. Median home values are $272,000 with home appreciation up by 5 percent and a positive job growth expected. While North East's cost of living is a little bit higher than the national average, the town is served by the Webutuk Public School is in nearby Amenia, with many private schools nearby in Millbrook and surrounding towns.
