New Windsor, Town of
New Windsor is rich in history
The Town of New Windsor in the eastern part of Orange County, New York borders the City of Newburgh, one of the fastest growing cities in the region. New Windsor’s recognition of its past are evident in its historic sites, including Knox’s Headquarters, Temple of Virtue, the Thomas McDowell house, the Brewster house, the Edmonston house and New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site. As well, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor museum honors those who sacrificed for our country.
Families also enjoy the Storm King Arts Center, a 500-acre open-air museum, features large outdoor sculptures and art installations. Fall is an especially great time to visit to take in the beautiful leaves.
Schunnemunk Mountain State Park features the highest point in Orange County and has medium to difficult trails for hiking to the summit. Reaching the top rewards hikers with views of the Catskills Mountains, Hudson River, High Point New Jersey and if it’s clear enough, even the top of the Empire State Building.
The area has many parks, farms and orchards for families to explore. Need some adult time? Take a dinner cruise on the Hudson River. Two-hour cruises offer a three-course dinner and a bar. There are also vineyards, bars, restaurants and breweries locally.
Neighboring towns offer go-kart racing, trampoline parks, escape rooms, large malls, including Central Valley, New York’s expansive outlet mall, Woodbury Common, plus museums, theatres, drive-ins and more. Orange County has something for all ages and interests and, with New York City short drive away, families can enjoy a quiet, small-town life or the hustle and bustle of the city.
Nearby attractions include Pollepel Island, which houses Bannerman’s Castle, where Francis Bannerman stored his weapons during the Civil War. The 6.5-acre island’s castle is its only building, and while the structure is crumbling, it’s is impressive and makes for great photo ops. Boat cruises and guided walking tours are available in the warmer months.
