Monroe, Town of

Monroe offers fun for families

Monroe is one of the most populated towns in Orange County, New York. Named after President James Monroe, the town is a great spot for families who like to take part in community events.

Monroe’s many happenings include a weekly farmer’s market held from June through November and the town’s carnival held in August. Free concerts are held in the parks during the summer and the winter, plus, there’s plenty of fun at Greenwood Lake Winter Carnival, along with winter sports.

The cold weather brings the polar plunge for people brave enough to put on a swimsuit and take a tip in the lake. Both summer and winter carnivals offer live entertainment, rides, games and food vendors. The community of Monroe gathers for holidays and other special celebrations, such as activities that commemorate Earth Day, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the anniversary of 9/11.

The Village of Monroe’s historic district is rich in area history and a fun place to walk. The area’s 81-acres consists of old homes, a theater, taverns, inns, cemeteries, churches and other landmarks, including remnants of an old racetrack. A favorite food of many families, Velveeta, became a nationally known brand here at the Monroe Cheese Company. Lots of information is available through the Monroe Historical Society, which offers history buffs listings of local places from the past and present. Museum Village is an open-air walk-through history and offers special events throughout the year.

Outdoor activities are abundant. Sapphire and Round lakes offer boating, fishing, swimming and winter sports. The Appalachian Trail is a favorite for hikers.

Monroe has several wineries including, Magninini Wintery and Palaia Winery, two great stops for date night or an evening out with adult friends. Special events, including Italian feasts and even knitting classes, are offered at the wineries throughout the year.
