We recently tried the free skate night at McCann Ice Arena. Abby and I headed in and got our skates while dad parked across the street in parking garage. If you decide to go and skate, they have down to 6t skates. My daughter is an 8t and they are absolutely adorable little brown skates. I was given two left feet which took on a totally different meaning. My lovely husband went and got the correct skate for me. I honestly thought I was going nuts. Sadly, my skates were very painful so I think if I go again, I will try men's or bring my own. I'm just assuming men's would be wider. I have big ol' duck feet. So all you duck footed people out there, be aware. I've also broken my right foot several times. That probably doesn't help.
They did an ice hockey demo and had a table setup where kids could win prizes. My daughter was so excited to get on the ice and said she was going to be just like Daniel tiger or Yancy Ancy (Fancy Nancy).
We stepped out on ice and she lost it. We tried to skate and she was panicking. I couldn't turn around as there were a bunch of people with walkers coming up on me. Yes, walkers. They now use walkers to help people learn to skate. It made me so nervous. All these slow moving people with walkers creeping closer and closer and closer as I am trying so hard to not be taken down by a three old. I don't heal like I used to and I no longer have the bounce back of my younger years. It was a total disaster. We tried side by side, in front of me where I was literally floating her on ice. A mom suggested I put my elbow on wall and slide along. Thank God I'm a decent skater. She would fall to the ground and I would have to pull up this floppy, screaming noodle. Ironically, when she got the most vocal, she actually skated perfectly. We managed to make the loop smaller and she got into her dad's arms as the whole five minutes on ice she just screamed "I want my daddy! Daddy, Daddy, Daddy! I WANT MY DAAAAAAADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
We left and went home and ate tacos. That was our eventful first time on ice. Thank God for their free skate event! This was an epic fail. But we will try again. Here's to our next adventure.
