Enter to win a Julia Doll!

Last year, the ever progressive Sesame Street show introduced a new character Julia, and she has Autism. I remember feeling equally excited as I was nervous about watching her first episode. Autism affects individuals so very differently, how could a puppet possibly portray the developmental disability appropriately so that young audiences and parents alike could understand and relate?

That seemed like an impossible task until I learned that Julia’s puppeteer, Stacey Gordon, has an Autistic son. I felt tears welling up as I turned on the show, knowing that beneath the adorable soft face and orange hair, was the hand of a mother who really understands this world. A mother whose hand has wiped away tears after meltdown, a hand that has offered scary new foods, and a hand that has been the comfort for her child around new people and places.

In her introductory episode, Julia is painting with her friends Elmo and Abby. Big Bird visits to check out their fun, but Julia doesn’t respond to him. In fact, she doesn’t say anything to him at all. Big bird thinks Julia doesn’t like him, until the gang explains that she has Autism and she does things a little differently, in a “Julia sort of way.” The cast and writers have done what I thought was impossible. In just a few short minutes, Autism was explained in simplicity and with sensitivity while also noting that Julia’s different way of doing things is specific to her.

Now, almost a year later, I’m crying tears of joy again because the plush company GUND has introduced Julia to their shelves. And she’s perfect. Her bright eyes and sweet smile really bring this doll to life. She’s so soft with flexible hands and feet to play and imitate the character on screen. Her bean-filled bottom also allows her to sit still, if just a quiet playmate is needed.
