There's no denying it... The Hudson Valley is chock-full of Incredible Kids and parents just waiting for the opportunity to brag about them! We asked parents to tell us how their kids save the world for a chance to be featured in the July magazine and the opportunity to be on a future cover of Hudson Valley Parent. Our staff was overwhelmed with all the great submissions.
We read stories about kids who love to give back to their community, spend their time volunteering and care about the environment and want to save it!
Choosing our three finalists was not easy. Alas, after much deliberation, Hudson Valley Parent is proud to announce our fourth group of Incredible Kids! We'd also like to extend a hearty thank you to our Incredible Kids sponsor, Children's Medical Group.
Jazmine, 9 of Poughkeepsie
Mom Je'Anetta says: My daughter is a member of Salvation Army in Poughkeepsie and enjoys helping Senior Citizens at the nursing homes. Out of everyone in the household Jazmine knows how to help the adults with their cell phones and computers. She sometimes helps her grandmother in the garden in the back and has fun collecting the vegetables. Usually when we go to the mall or a store that has push/pull doors she holds them open for the next person. She enjoys helping and talking to others and making new friends along the way.
Jazmine likes to make her own money so she collects bottles and cans to keep make money in her pocket. Pretty much a pretty friendly and hardworking kid.
Nathaniel, 10 of Poughkeepsie
Mom Rachel says: He has been intrinsically motivated to give back. He always makes sure I give him money to donate whenever he sees fundraisers such as Veterans at grocery stores, Salvation Army volunteers, Volunteer Firefighter "Boot" fundraisers, Alex Lemonade stands at his school, stuffing book bags at United Way, etc. He wrote a story about a group of talking cows who take a trip to the moon. He's a great writer for his age and it was an entertaining short story. He wants to publish it on Amazon to raise money for his favorite charity.
His newest thing to do is take left over food and drive to find homeless people and hand it to them. On Easter we took a box of granola bars and drove into the City of Poughkeepsie. He saw a man pushing a cart and Nathaniel could tell he was homeless. "There! Mom!" he said. We pulled the car over. Nathaniel rolled down his window and handed the man the box. The man said, "Oh, thank you. God Bless You." Nathaniel got a big smile and as we drove away he said, "He was so appreciative, Mom. We should do this every holiday."
Chacyn, 7 of Florida
Mom Crystal says: She wants to help the Earth. She is constantly concerned about recycling and littering. Every chance she gets she teaches everyone she comes in contact with about the importance of recycling and please don't litter. Let's keep the Earth clean and around forever is her saying.
