Hudson Valley Art Programs to Enjoy This Fall

Autumn is the perfect back drop for art.

Back to school is in full swing and the house is quiet again. So this gives me a bit more time to think about and plan for our fall fun activities. Every year we do the traditional apple picking and fall harvest activities which we love. This year as I am marking my calendar with can't miss activities, I am also marking dates for some fun new art exhibits! Some of them take place outside with the added bonus of the colorful fall back drop. My family loves to pack a picnic and take a leisurely stroll by some art.

Here is my line up:

Art Walk in Kingston: Taking place on September 23rd and 24th you can take the kids for a walk through three specific areas of the city to check out local art. There will be a variety of mediums on display in galleries, poetry readings and performances at the lace mill. We can't wait to check out the O+ walking mural tour! For a list of artists click here. You can find an interactive map on the 2017 Art Walk Kingston Facebook page.

Collaborative Concepts Farm Art: Happening through October 28th at Saunders Farm in Garrison. This free display of sculptural art takes place on a local farm. It is described as Storm King with cattle. What better way to spend your time outside than exploring art surrounded by the jewel tones of the fall season. Picnicking is encouraged. Find more details here.

Art on The Farm: Vassar Brothers farm and CSA program offers seventeen sculptural exhibits on a self guided tour through October 29th. Free admission! Keep an eye out for some really great workshops coming up! Learn more here.

Wilderstein Outdoor Sculptural Biennial: Taking place through October 31st at the Wilderstein Historic Site in Rhinebeck. Check out eighteen sculptures created by local Hudson Valley artists. Check out the viewing schedule here.

In anticipation of those rainy days you just need a place to go to get out of the house, here are two exhibits we are excited to check out!

Equine: A Group Exhibit of Art Celebrating the Horse: Now through October 2nd your little horse lover can admire various paintings of horses. This is an indoor gallery great for rainy days, or if you want something different than outdoor sculptures. You can find details about this gallery located in Saugerties by clicking here.

Samuel Dorsky Museum New Paltz: Take advantage of the monthly family fun day at the museum. Kids can create their own art based on the current exhibits in the gallery. There is a suggested $5 donation per family to cover the cost of materials, but no one is ever turned away from enjoying this event. Check out the current schedule here. You can also read about my family's last art adventure at the Dorsky here.

There is literally a never ending supply of free art in our beautiful Hudson Valley. I feel so lucky to have this many opportunities to share so many different perspectives with my kids. I hope you will get out and enjoy some outdoor art!
