A little talk about what you’re going to see is always useful, as a way of adding context to the museum visit. If you’re going to the MOMA, you may want to have a short conversation about what modern art is, as compared to what they might see at the Museum of Natural History. Always remember that every child’s interpretation is valid regardless of age or education. When we view art, what we see is based upon our experiences, emotions, thoughts, processes, relations, education and more. Let the child look and ask questions about the work, but don’t feel it needs to be explained and justified to them.
