Hopeland Trails, Staatsburg NY around the pond

Hopeland Trails, Staatsburg NY

Hopeland trails, staatsburg NY
I love the Hopeland Trails. It feels like a hidden gem in the middle of Staatsburg. We go to other places nearby such as Roosevelt and Vanderbilt when we are in the area. However, Hopeland Trails is just so peaceful.

Abby girl was itching to get out of the house and wanted to walk the dog. Our poor dog is about ten years old and has back issues. She cannot do ten mile hikes up a steep mountain anymore and her stubby legs and big boned body don't help the situation. So, when Abby walks the dog, it needs to be easier, shorter trails. Hopeland trail system is great for that!

The loop we decided to do this time took us around the pond. At the first trail you can veer off to the right, don't. Stay on the trail and follow it down. You will see a pond on your right. There is a picnic table and an awesome stop for a peanut butter and honey sandwich and some water (unless you are allergic to peanut butter) as you watch the dog jump in the pond and the ducks floating off in the distance.

After we ate and trampled into the woods for a quick pee break, we followed the trail that ran alongside the pond. Keep traveling on that and don't go off to the left (red trail around pond).

Side note, remember to carry out whatever you carry in. Nobody wants to see your toilet paper like a decorative ornament blowing in the brush and the ducks don't want to get stuck in a sandwich bag.

We crossed over a stream. Abby crawled down a ravine and I had to drag her out and then give the dog some encouragement to do the same. I kept checking my GPS and eventually ended up at a field.

At the field, I got pretty far and realized I dropped the leash. So, we back tracked to get that before heading through more field. At the end of that trail, we turned left and voila, we were back on the path we started on in the beginning.

At the car, I put my gear away and got the dog in the car. My child kept announcing she wanted to jump in muddy puddles. I tried to explain that it was around 45 degrees and she was persistent as she sat down and began yanking off boots, socks and pants. I told her alright and warned her it would be cold. She jumped in every single one cracking up about the cold water as she sported a hat, long sleeve shirt and super hero underwear.

I got her right in car and dried off before texting a friend we were back at car*. We then headed home.

We highly recommend the Hopeland Trails. Just be warned that the muddy puddles are still a tad chilly. For the record, Abby girl dared me to go in and I chickened out completely.
Hopeland trails
*Hiker fact- no matter how local or the distance of a hike always alert at least three people where you are going and when you plan on being back. Then text or call again at the end. I got fairly injured on a local hike in August. I was fortunate that I'm a strong hiker and have good mind over matter because I was able to get out of the woods. I have dragged myself out of the Vermont wilderness on a broken foot. So a scraped up leg was nothing. But, what if I hadn't been able to get myself out of the woods? I can't send a three year old for help and my dog isn't Lassie. Also, I try not to post on social media where I'm heading as you don't know who will see it and what if your post isn't seen at all?
