Highlands, Town of
Highlands Is Hometown USA

The Town of Highlands is located on the eastern border of Orange County, New York. Military buildings and spaces occupy much of the town, including the United States Military Academy at West Point, which is located along the Hudson River. A popular tourist destination, the Academy includes tours and a museum.
In all, the Town of Highlands is comprised of the Village of Highland Falls, hamlet of Fort Montgomery, Historic West Point and Bear Mountain State Park. The area offers a wide variety of options, including historic buildings, an apothecary, shops, restaurants and more.
For families, Bear Mountain State Park contains a zoo and an old-fashioned, working carousel. As well, the Iona Island Bird Sanctuary is a great spot for animal lovers, especially bird enthusiasts. Another attraction is the antique Tiffany window at the Church of Holy Innocents.
Of Highlands’ parks and outdoor recreation areas is the 911 Memorial Patriot Garden. The town and surrounding communities also offer outdoor enthusiasts places to hike, hunt, bird-watch, swim, collect fall leaves, golf, boat, play winter sports and mountain bike.
Community resources and support to area youth are provided through the Center of Highland Falls, including family nights, foster a grandparent programs, a farmer’s market and information on drug recovery.
Highlands became “hometown USA” in 1981 when Iranian hostages were brought to the Highland Falls village to begin their recovery. As well, pop singer/songwriter, Billy Joel wrote and recorded a song about the area called “Summer, Highland Falls.”
Highlands is a close-knit community great for raising families and feeling connected to neighbors.
