The Food Relationship

Bridging the gap between your brain and your stomach

“Once I have bariatric surgery, I want my relationship with food
to be different — and better.”

A client said this to me. So innocent. What actually happens with weight loss surgery? Your stomach changes. And your brain stays the same.

What is a relationship? Thoughts you think about the other person or object. So, with the absence of changing your thoughts about the object, nothing will change. So our real objective is to change our thoughts about food.

We are taught that once something bad happens in a romantic relationship that we turn off the love. But really, the thoughts about that person is what changes.

But that is not going to happen with food unless you actively decide that to be true.

I teach my clients that the way we think matters. Your thoughts dictate the way you live your life and affect how you see the world.

It is optional to think the way you do.You choose this. We know this is the case. For example, even if you have a sibling who was raised similarly to you  they may have a completely different life.

Coaching allows you to reveal your current thought patterns, to which I ask you if you want to keep believing those thought patterns. Remember, most of our beliefs are taught to us in our childhood.  Beliefs that we don’t even know if we want to have.

So, coaching is the act of deciding on purpose what you want to believe about  the following: your “favorite meal,” what it means to take a break, how it feels after you’ve had a stressful family event.

Remember, your human brain has one job. To keep you alive. And it gets incredibly efficient at doing that.

That is why it is so hard to break a “bad” habit. Because your brain believes that you will die without it. But we KNOW better. The habits you have are completely neutral. It is why it is possible to be addicted to drugs and cigarettes.

The brain gets efficient at the “thing” — it does not matter what the “thing” is.

So, coaching opens up possibilities. To decide on purpose. To live intentionally.

Because we already know what happens when we are living in default. Look around you. What do you want for yourself? Anything you could possibly want is available to you. Not a single thing needs to change. Just decide.

Was there ever a period of time in your life where the feeling of shame was the theme? Shame when you didn't meet a goal you set. Shame when you gained weight rather then losing it.

Do Life Coaches have it all together?

Sep 16, 2019

I think my favorite part since deciding to become a life coach has been the awareness and recognition in my own self of the patterns my brain offers me. Thinking, feeling, doing patterns that have run my life. Patterns that get better and better because as you practice one thing, your brain just gets better and better at it.
