Go Hike Fishkill Ridge to Lambs Hill

Go Hike Fishkill Ridge to Lambs Hill

hanging out on the fishkill ridge trail heading to lambs hill

FISHKILL RIDGE TO LAMBS HILL DISCLAIMER-

Fishkill Ridge to Lambs Hill is definitely not a hike for just anyone. It is not stroller friendly and not for wobbly walkers. Abby did the first 1.3 on her own with very steep sections and a scramble and an additional, 1.5 or so on the way down on the final stretch to car. However, she's been in woods since four months, cruising since six months and climbing/walking since 8 months.

scrambling toddler

This is not an average toddler/preschool led hike. I would recommend it for older children or carrier only. The child has to be able to listen well, communicate and navigate for safety reasons. I've trained Abby to watch for rattle snakes, how to use my phone to call for help, read the markers and how to stay hydrated and bug/tick free. She actually pushed me on at points I wanted to turn around and give up. We also took about an hour a mile to get through. So this hike took almost five hours. Normally, its a 45 minute mile or we can run a fifteen minute half mile. My point being, this trip was not easy on either of us

THE HIKE-

You start out at the parking lot on Fairview Road in Fishkill, New York. The address you can type in the GPS says 22 Fairview Road, but when GPS says, "you are here," chances are you're still going to not quite be there. Drive slowly and look for the road up into the woods and the trail head. Park in that parking lot. Then go past the sign and walk up the trail. Stay on that trail and at about point four miles, notice the sign for the campground. Do not take that trail. Stay on the trail you are on. It's the red markers. Side note, shortly after starting the hike, the trail splits and just look for red. Stay to your right.

Fishkill Ridge Sign

stream on trail lambs hillIt's a steady uphill climb with some switchbacks and just when you think you're going to be getting to an awesome view and you're all done, it drops you down into a ravine. There is some nice flowing water in the springtime. Then after you stop and take in nice water the steepness goes to another level. So if you have a water filter system, here is a good time (and only time) to fill up.

You will keep climbing and it will start to feel really narrow so watch out for the drop on the side and the loose rocks underneath your feet as you wind up. Keep heading up the mountain until you will see rocks going straight up. The view is good here too.

Then go up the rocks and meander through and catch your breath. Eventually, it will open up to another pretty good view and on a nice day, it feels like you can see forever. But don't be tricked because this is not the last stop- keep hiking.

fishkill ridgeYou will not stay on red anymore (or faded red that looks more orange). Follow the white trail (Fishkill Ridge Trail) and stay on that until you come to another major uphill climb over rocks and scramble. The trail goes to the left. Don't go to the right.

Before the climb, you will go on a nice woods walk and kind of go up and down through the woods and over a tree branch or around it. Soon, you will get to the bottom of Lambs Hill.

tree hugger on fishkill ridgeI did it with a carrier and it was not easy. I had to use trees to swing from tree to tree to get up to the top. Kind of like Jane of Jungle. Just test the trees before grabbing onto them because you don't want to fall down the hill with a child on your back. On the way down, Abby was awake and loved how I thanked each tree I used as assistance and it started a whole tree loving fest in the forest.

At the top of Lamb's Hill, the view is awesome. This by far, the best view of the whole trip. You can see Mount Beacon, as well as some other awesome landmarks. This is a great place to take a snack and take a breath. When you're all ready, trace your steps all the way back to the car a little over four miles round trip. Then give yourself a pat on your back and do a little celebration with your child! You did it! This was our second attempt. We tried last year and made it a half mile round trip.

Where to next? You will have to read to find out or jump over to adventuresofabbygirl.com or our YouTube channel to see other trails we've done. We are currently attempting 100 miles in six weeks along with being ambassadors for the Get Fit Challenge. We just ended week 4 and have hiked almost every listed trail in Dutchess County. So, It's hiking season. Get outdoors and hike on. We might see you there.
