Fishkill offers family fun, indoors and out

Safe and welcoming, Fishkill in southern Dutchess County has a suburban feel and rich history that residents believe make it great place to raise a family.

While it’s an easy 60-mile commute from Fishkill to New York City in the south or 10 miles to Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, the town also offers a small-town sensibility. Most residents own their homes in the town, from fixer uppers to regal mansions. In recent years, many have relocated to Fishkill from Westchester County and New York City for its affordability and warm community.

Although many people enjoy the area’s nearby shopping centers and restaurants—with plans underway for new eateries and bars—outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the town’s opportunities for hiking, including at Mount Beacon, taking in the natural scenery, and biking trails.

For family fun, the SplashDown Beach water park has plenty of action for birthday parties, swimming and thrill seeking-water rides. Nearby, the Van Wyck Homestead Museum takes about an hour to walk the grounds, while inside visitors learn of Fishkill's link to the nation’s American Revolution. Notable, as well, is the Jeet Kune Do Martial Arts Institute that holds classes all ages and whose Sifu Ted Wong was taught by the infamous martial artist, Bruce Lee.

Fishkill’s highly rated schools serve students in area, while nearby colleges offer advanced education. Enrichment programs for all are available at the town’s community center, along with the town’s libraries.
