Go Wander in Clarence Fahnestock State Park

Explore the trails at Clarence Fahnestock State Park

hugging trees in Fahnestock

Abby and I have been exploring Fahnestock State Park for a few years now. We love how diverse the terrain and scenery is throughout the park. Fun fact, the Appalachian Trail also runs through there. If you don't know what the Appalachian Trail is, it's a trail that stretches from Georgia to Maine and every year people either thru-hike or section hike the trail. I have section hiked through several states so far.

Fahnestock has something for every ability and every interest including horses and every season.

BULL HILL
Bull Hill via Lone Star, Split Rock, Undercliff, Washburn, and Nelsonville Trails Loop is a 5.4-mile, moderately trafficked loop trail located near Cold Spring, New York (alltrails.com)

This has some great views and will definitely get your heart pumping. It isn't stroller friendly but is great older ones that can do this amount of hiking. I did it when Abby was still very small so I ended up carrying her a lot.

Bull Hill

Charcoal Burners-
This is the one where my phone decided to break and I ended up doing a very large loop over several peaks. The only people I saw were migrant farm workers who did not speak English. It was about 90 degrees outside and I was beyond happy to see my car. There were some great views. I could have cut through on a trail making this a much more manageable hike. Be very aware of trail markers in Fahnestock. There are some very good, marked trails, but offshoots and twists and turns can get you turned around quickly. This is a moderate hike.

Pelton Pond-

This easy, short hike is a great picnic spot. It is rocky and not stroller friendly, but it is easy to get around.
Pelton Pond

We just did an up and back on this one. My daughter was small at the time and did some of the footwork herself. There is a set of stairs that will make your calves burn. There's no view but it is a nice workout.

Catfish Loop Trail-

Again, a rocky, moderate hike. Rocks are a common theme on the trails throughout Fahnestock. Abby loved the rock scrambles in here. Check out the video on our Youtube Channel Here.

Appalachian Trail via Iron Mine Loop-

We did this hike a couple days ago. I loved how the terrain changed a lot. There was a little bit of everything on this hike and awesome views. There was water crossings, rock scrambles, swamps, pine forests, etc. It is 5.4 miles and a loop. I advise to watch the markers carefully. Your are on the Appalachian Trail for about half the hike and then stay on Blue. Do not divert from Blue.

Abby is 3.5 and did 4 miles on her own in muck boots. However, this is also the child that does this whole growling, "are you tough" routine to get pumped up before a scramble (video is on Instagram). Most children will need to be older or love their carrier unless they are a wild little mountain goat like my child.

Where will we head next? Who knows! But, we have a lot more of this park to explore. Perhaps we will see you on the trail.
