Get speedy, professional care at an urgent care

Got a sick kid?

Children don't wait until business hours to get sick or injured. If your son spikes a fever in the middle of the night, where are you going to go? If your daughter falls off of her bike on a Sunday morning, where are you going to take her to get an X-ray? If the pediatrician is closed, but you need help now and it isn't a case for the emergency room, urgent care centers are the place to go.

Local urgent care centers are full of helpful and professional physicians who will care for your child quickly. We asked urgent care doctors from across the Hudson Valley questions that moms are dying to know the answers to.

WHAT KINDS OF TESTS CAN I GET DONE AT AN URGENT CARE CENTER?

OrthoExpress is a walk-in facility that is able to treat acute orthopedic injuries without the long wait at an emergency room. An acute injury is a sudden injury that is usually associated with a traumatic event, such as clashing into another player during sports or falling from a bike.

We offer on-site X-ray and MRI imaging in order to diagnose sprains, strains and fractures, as well as ligament and tendon injuries. We are able to treat your child's injury with casting, splinting or bracing based on their diagnosis. In addition, we have occupational and physical
therapy services available so your child can receive expert care from intake to recovery, all within the same facility. In our Poughkeepsie location, we have the capability to perform surgery at our ambulatory surgical center.

In order to better serve busy parents just like you, we also recently extended hours at our four convenient locations.

WHEN SHOULD I GO TO URGENT CARE VS. WAIT FOR A PEDIATRICIAN?

The best place for children to receive medical care is at their pediatrician's office. However, we know kids don't wait for office hours to get sick.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends caregivers should never hesitate to call the pediatrician's office first. Pediatricians are accustomed to taking phone calls at all times and can often deal with problems over the phone or direct you to the appropriate level of care.

Life-threatening emergencies should be handled in the ER. These include breathing difficulties (including severe asthma attacks), severe trauma, seizures, severe allergic reactions and head or neck injuries.

If your child's injury or illness is not life-threatening, but needs attention quickly and your pediatrician's office is closed, Urgent Care is the way to go. Urgent Care is similar to the pediatrician's, with a few added services, like x-ray capabilities.

CAN MY CHILD RECEIVE A PHYSICAL AT URGENT CARE?

Yes, you can get a physical at an urgent care center depending on your insurance. Most insurance allow one physical each year. If you have a physical at your urgent care that will be the only one for the year that your insurance will pay for. It's important to check with your insurance or with the urgent care to make sure they will cover a physical at that facility. To see if you will be covered, call the urgent care you plan to visit.

Once you have ascertained that the urgent care will take your insurance, simply bring your insurance card to the urgent care during your visit. Bring any forms you need filled out with you to your urgent care visit. This includes vaccination records.

DOES STAFF CONTACT MY PHYSICIAN AFTER MY VISIT?

At Emergency One, we feel that each patient should hear from us following a visit. You might receive a call with lab or x-ray results or we might call just to see how you're doing. If you provide us with the name of your pediatrician or primary care physician, we will send your discharge notes electronically before you have even left our facility. Since we only do urgent care, we feel it is very important to provide a continuity of care between us and your own physician. Likewise, your physician should never feel any risk of losing you as a patient. We are independent and do not provide the same service as they do, therefore, we will always send their patient and their results back to their personal physician. We have one goal; provide the best patient experience possible while communicating the results of your visit to your family doctor.
