Fishkill brings together suburban ease and outdoor fun

East Fishkill in southern Dutchess County offers families a rich cultural history, along with tempting restaurants, community neighborhoods, plenty of shopping, beautiful scenery and farm life. The town, whose name is derived from a Dutch word meaning “fish creek” and was known as Tioranda by local Indian tribes, also boasts access to major shopping and is close to several colleges.

While locals revel in the town’s tranquility of suburban and outdoor life, including hiking, beautiful scenery and biking trails, including on the Dutchess Rail Trail, commuters also appreciate East Fishkill’s easy accessibility to the businesses and buzz of New York City located 60 miles to the south by car, train or bus. As well, Stewart International Airport in New Windsor is 10 miles away.

Many residents love the region’s small-town feel, where it’s easy to run in to friends and family during local outings and at events. Here, the community comes together in times of celebration and heartache. For instance, an all-volunteer crew at the Hopewell Depot works to preserve the community’s heritage and history.

Families in East Fishkill are pleased with the town’s local schools, and often take advantage of programs offered through the town’s library and recreation center. Among the showcases at the Van Wyck Homestead Museum are recording of Fishkill's role during the American Revolution.

Of note are shows at the Clove Creek Dinner Theater, including events such as A Christmas Carol for adults and families with hotel packages for a brief getaway. In warmer weather, the exciting Splash Down Beach, America's Biggest Little Water Park is a thrill for all ages with events, water rides, swimming, places to eat and stay. Regal Fishkill is the local movie theater with a concession stand for the latest movie releases.
