Looking for a project for your community? How about for kids' clubs and groups?  Create a Plant-A-Tree event and help save the planet. Easy to do. Fun. And lots of people would love to participate.

Free Seedlings Available for Youth Education through School Seedling Program

Applications are now being accepted for the tree nursery's School Seedling Program. From now until March 31, schools and youth education organizations across New York State may apply to receive up to 50 free tree or shrub seedlings to plant with students.

The program is an excellent tool for educators to use in meeting Next Generation Science Standards. It provides a hands-on opportunity for students to learn about natural systems, and while planting and caring for seedlings, students learn about ecosystems and the valuable role trees play, in addition to building awareness of conservation issues. The goal of the program is to help instill a sense of environmental stewardship and set a foundation that will allow students to make informed decisions about the use of natural resources.

All schools (public, private, nursery, elementary, secondary, vocational, college, and university) and youth education-based organizations are eligible to apply, provided trees are planted within New York State. Visit DEC'swebsite for more information or to apply online. For assistance or questions, contact the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery at or 518-581-1439.

Shipping Options and Instructions

Please make shipping arrangements when you place your order. Orders placed after May 1 must be picked up at the Nursery. There are three (3) options available:

1. Pick up your order at the Saratoga Tree Nursery, located just south of Saratoga Springs on Route 50, approximately 30 miles north of Albany. You will be notified by mail when your order is ready. Pay no shipping.

2. Preferred method: For a fee, seedlings are shipped by designated truckers to a single location within certain counties. Customers pick up their orders at designated locations on specified dates, which are not set until early April. Do not choose this option if you need delivery by or on a specific date. Orders shipped this way are given preference over option #3. Customers will be notified of the shipping charges when the order is made. Orders MUST be placed by March 31 for this option.

3. UPS delivery: Limited to customers who do not have the "designated trucker" option, or who place an order after March 31. Fee per order: $5.00 plus 20% of the total bill or $20.00, whichever is higher. Minimum UPS fee is $25.

Shipments are made from mid-April through early May. Seedlings should be planted as soon as possible. Until planted, keep seedlings cool and out of direct sunlight. Do not let roots dry out.
