So, I am not sure about you, but my family goes through A LOT of chapstick. While my husband and I can hang onto ours until they are empty, my 4 kids.... well, they go through several in a week. Have you seen the price on good store bought chaptick!?!? It is pricey!! Sure there are cheaper types, but they are filled with toxic chemicals. So what is a mom or anyone to do?
A few years ago, I started making my own. It is so easy and so AFFORDABLE!
The first step is to melt coconut oil and raw shea butter in a double boiler.
Next, add in the beeswax. Adding the beeswax in after melting the coconut butter and Shea butter, helps to speed the process of melting the beeswax.
Once everything is melted, remove from heat and add your choice of essential oils. I have used lavender, peppermint, grapefruit, lemon, and citrus. Once mixed fill your tubes or tins and enjoy!
I store them in a Ziploc baggie in the freezer.. Mostly so I remember where they are! lol My kids love making these with me. It is the perfect rainy day activity!
Ingredients
3 Tbl Coconut Oil
2 Tbl Raw Shea Butter
3 Tbl Beeswax Pellets (Increase for summer use)
10-15 drops of essential oils
(optional)
Vanilla extract, cacao powder, beet root powder etc. for flavor or coloring.
This recipe will fill 12-15 tubes depending in the size. You can find tubes and tins online!
