Beekman: quaint town, big community spirit

Community takes center stage in Beekman, where neighbors feel more like family and always are on-hand to support each other.

With a population of 14,000 in southeastern Dutchess County, Beekman has a suburban but rural feel and is especially beautiful during fall foliage and apple picking season, when many enjoy nearby Barton Orchards, a family-fun pick-your-own destination with Halloween Haunted House, petting zoo, tap room and aerial obstacle courses at its Tree Top Adventures.

Historic homes and horse farms dot the town and families enjoy summers spent at the beach on the Recreation Park lake; Sylvan Lake also is nearby. Beekman also has a dog park also, terrific for dog lovers and owners, especially since not every small town offers one.

Then, too, time is spent simply taking in the town’s breathing space, fresh air, streams and wildlife. As one resident stated, with the Hudson River 20 minutes away and the Appalachian trail in your backyard, there's a lot to do outside all year.

Today, the hamlet of Poughquag is the town’s main business district. For business travelers, New York City is an easy commute to the south, thanks to the Metro-North train station in the south end of town. While not quite a walkable village, Beekman is a safe town that offers the convenience of a ten-minute drive or bike ride to most of its services.

Close to 90 percent of Beekman’s residents are homeowners, with median home values at about $300,000 and average monthly rents, $1,200. Additionally, the town’s five public school districts are highly rated and two major medical centers are in nearby Poughkeepsie, including Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital.

Beekman's prosperous past was steeped in the iron ore industry, with many Irish immigrants settling there to escape the Potato Famine.
