Deborah McLean, Poughkeepsie Day School
Many children have their first “school” experience well before kindergarten. By school, we really mean a community where kids learn and play together. These experiences are important for children as they developmentally move from parallel play to playing with others, including compromising and negotiating. The kindergarten year often marks the first year that your child may take a bus to school and the beginning of “formal” schooling. It can be very helpful for parents to look into schools the winter before their child will start kindergarten. The internet is a great resource to learn about schools and the programs they have to offer. Feel free to call the school to ask for a tour as well.
