Amenia brings together beautiful scenery and warm community

With stunning views of the Taconic Mountain Range and Berkshires, the natural beauty of Amenia is something to behold. Its rural scenery is enjoyed by locals and tourists who see many of the same views that were seen by ancient Indian tribes and Revolutionary War soldiers. In fact, one of Amenia’s most notable past residents was Thomas Young, who participated in the Boston Tea Party.

While Amenia is considered by many as a sleepy little town that’s home to working locals, tourists and second homeowners or weekenders that live in farmhouses and large Victorian homes, the town offers plenty of family-centric activities. Apple orchards and dairy farms are enjoyed by kids and adults, as are fishing and game activities. There also are clubs for scouts, seniors and others, plus sports programs, such as basketball, baseball, fitness and martial arts. Lime Rock Auto Racing Park is nearby, and residents can participate in open skating and hockey at the nearby Millbrook School. If you’re a ski enthusiast, a straight drive up NYS Route 22—the town’s main thoroughfare—will take you the Catamount Mountain Resort.

Families also enjoy drive-in movies in town and Amenia's expansive cuisine, from casual spots, such as Four Brothers Pizza and Fudgy's Ice Cream, to fine dining that features local chefs with international flairs and training from the United Kingdom and the Caribbean. Amenia’s upscale Troutbeck Inn was written about in Vogue magazine for its legendary guests and its place in historical significance, including that it was where the NAACP was created. Another popular spot is the Silo Ridge Country Club that offers banquets, lunches and dinners, plus camping, golfing, kayaking, and water rafting.

Both public and private schools are available and many of the town’s houses and churches are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. More of the town’s history is recorded at the Amenia Free Library Association that preserves rare historical books, and hosts Santa visits for little ones each December.

Many residents work in nearby Millerton's Harney & Sons Tea factory. Sharon Hospital, a major medical center, is five miles away in Sharon, Connecticut.
