Adriance Library Poughkeepsie, NY

Abby goes to several libraries throughout the week even if it's to wander through the books. However, Adriance Memorial Library in Poughkeepsie, NY is the one where she spends her most time.

You can enter from lot one bottom floor or through main entrance. The children's areas is just a quick elevator ride up to the second floor. Side note, if your little one needs to use a restroom, use the second floor restrooms. The desk has a key.

Main Programs-

Abby typically goes to the preschool story time at 10 am on Mondays. However, they also have a program we have dropped into on Wednesday mornings and today we attended the Thursday afternoon session at 1:30 pm.  Each time slot we have attended was taught by a different librarian. I'm not sure if it’s always like that or if it changes. There is no registration. Just go.

The librarian reads several stories to the children and incorporates other content into rug-time to keep it interesting. Today the librarian had Abby fill out a name plaque and stick it on the board. However, if you tell Abby to sign her name, she literally signs her name.

At the end of rug time, they do a cute song with sticks that has them follow different directions within the song. After, sticks, all the children know it's time for free play. They get around an hour of free play in an awesome preschool type room with lots of stations to choose from around the classroom.

At the end, they do a cleanup song and everyone helps. Followed by stickers or stamps for job well done. On Valentines, they all got a present from the mailbox.

Abby then goes to main part of children’s library to look at books, play a puzzle or go on computer. After that, we take the stairs down and work on our counting by counting every stair to the bottom!

Additional Programming-

Abby also has just started attending their after school elementary programs as well as those open to preschool because of where she is, Abby can do both. They are awesome.

Most recently, we celebrated Chinese New Years. She tried and Eggroll, made an instrument out of plates and paints and used masks on a stick at a

Before that, they had a stuffed animal sleep-over. The children came in pajamas with their stuffed animal buddy to the library. They made their stuffed animals a name tag. They read books, sang songs, had a snack, made sleeping bags from pillow cases the library provided and then tucked their stuffed animals in around a fake fire. They left their stuffed animals overnight and we picked up "unicorn" the next morning. We were presented with printouts in a booklet of all the ways their stuffed animals got into mischief around the library after hours. FYI the librarians dressed in their favorite pajamas too!

Overall, the staff seems to truly care about every child that comes in there. They are there to answer any questions and are eager to lend a helping hand. They really put an effort into quality programming we couldn't do elsewhere because of cost. Everything we have done so far is free. If there is any sort of cost, it will be listed. They have really fostered a love of books and the library for my daughter.
