We tried it twice

  2 of 5

This camp is one of very few options in our area (Red Hook, Rhinebeck) for young campers, and proof of vaccinations is actually enforced here (an important detail for families with babies at home). Southlands is a lovely setting and the kids spend the majority of their time outdoors, doing crafts, taking walks, and playing with toys that are set up under a tent in bins. There is also a pony ride for each camper. All of this sounded wonderful to us, but our child didn't like it the first year (3.5 years old). We thought it was because she was on the young side so we tried it again this year, but again, she really didn't like it (4.5 years old). In both years she had complaints about conflicts with other children (mean kids, toy snatching, etc). This year, there were also complaints of being too hot. These complaints are unusual for my daughter who loves to play outdoors, loves nature, and is generally very engaged, gregarious, and social. This year, camp felt more like an outdoor daycare, and our daughter prefers a bit more intellectual stimulation. We were hoping she would love this, but it hasn't been a good fit for our child these past two years.
